  • Antique Vintage Circa 1850's 19th Century Dutch Whaling Flensing Whale Blubber Knife Tool Forged Iron Blade Nautical Curiosity Oddity

Antique 19th Century Whaling Flensing Knife

    225.00

Antique 19th Dutch century whale flensing knife

This sharp sickel shaped blade was hand forged in the mid 1800’s and served a messy purpose.
It was used in the Dutch whaling industry to cut off blubber in the decompositioning of a killed whale.

Although I hope we all agree that hunting these majestic creatures is a horrible occasion, the whaling industry has been very important to the European history and economy. Back then the oil that was obtained from whales was used to produce many everyday products such as lamp oil, candles, and soap and therefor was essential. Sadly overhunting the arctic seas for centuries has been devastating to the populations of many whale species. Because of its dark past, mixed vibes remain attached to this rare relic though I still consider it a true piece of history that comes with loads of adventurous tales!

It’s crudely hand-wrought and forged in iron with a cone to attach a wooden handle.

This relic would be an unique piece to add to your collection or cabinet of curiosities!

Even after almost two centuries this knife still remains in good condition! The iron surface of the blade only shows some minor wear due to use and time.

    Measurements:
    Length: 41 cm
    Width: 24 cm
    Diameter cone: 4.5 cm

It was skillfully hand carved out of one single piece of solid wood and is a perfect example of old school craftmanship as it features some unique characteristics and details!
Considering the size of the sculpture it must have been carved out of quite a large tree trunk.

Dressed in traditional clothing including a long black cloak and feathered hat combined with his black beard and the hunting horn attached to its belt this hunter man looks to be from a fairy tale!
It was also hand painted in lovely earthy tones and features glass eyes.

It would be an unique decor piece to greet peolpe at the entrance of a bar, man cave or cabin!

After a century the sculpture remains in worn condition and shows a lovely distressed patina that only adds to its character by giving it a rough touch!

The figure has been coated with transparent lacquer to give the surface a protective layer and a glossy finish.
