Antique Early 1900’s MendelTrunx Steamer Trunk
Early 1900’s wardrobe steamer trunk
This trunk was manufactured in the early 1900s by MendelTrunx in Cincinnaty, USA.
Its sturdy, compact design unfolds to reveal extendable clothing rails with hangers and a wooden suitcase on the bottom on one side, while the other side features built-in drawers. This design made it ideal for storing clothing and other belongings while traveling. Trunks like these were commonly used by passengers on ships, carriages, and trains throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The trunk still bears a Cunard Line destination sticker featuring a large steamer ship, indicating that it once departed from Montreal aboard the Ivernia, which operated from 1899 until 1917, when it was sunk by a U-boat during World War I. The original owner’s initials are also painted on one side.
While this piece is still functional for travel, it also makes a unique furniture statement—perfect for storing your wardrobe or even repurposing as a nightstand!
After nearly a century of journeys across the world, the trunk shows signs of use and wear. However, its beautifully aged patina only adds to its charm. To preserve and enhance its character, the surface has been treated with antique wax, providing a protective layer and a subtle glossy finish.
