Vintage 50s mountaineering carabiner & pitons
This authentic set of climbing equipment consists of a carabiner and several pitons manufactured in Italy during the 1950s by R. Cassin. Founded by the legendary Italian mountaineer Riccardo Cassin, the company became renowned for producing high-quality climbing equipment and played an important role in the development of modern mountaineering. One of the pitons is clearly marked with the R. Cassin maker’s mark.
Designed for traditional climbing, pitons were hammered into cracks and seams in the rock to create secure anchor points, helping to protect climbers from falls. Before the advent of modern removable protection, they were an essential part of a mountaineer’s equipment.
With their rugged appearance and rich history, these pieces make excellent decorative objects for a cabin, lodge, man cave, or mountaineering collection.
After more than 70 years, the gear remains in worn vintage condition, showing authentic signs of age and use. Over the decades, the metal has developed a beautiful oxidized patina that enhances its character and historical appeal. The pieces have been treated with antique wax, providing a protective layer and a subtle sheen while preserving their original appearance.
