Antique 1916′ WWI British Cavalry sketch board
This unique tool was issued by the British army during the First World War to their cavalry men and were used to sketch enemy positions, trenches, landscape features, and record data during the First World War.
Although this sketching board is small it’s design is smart and packed full of useful features. The two side bars act as rollers allowing a long piece of paper or map to be rolled across the board. It also has a compass, ruler, scales and a gadget called a clinometre. This is for measuring the angle of a slope. The sturdy leather strap was used to secure it to your forearm so that it could be used whilst on horseback.
The bottom rear of the board has the manufacturer information listed: Houghton – Butcher, London – 1916
It’s also marked with the name of it’s owner: J.W. KAYE, it’s serial number and two british broad arrow stamps.
It would fit into any WWI or British army collection!
Even after more than a century this piece still remains in good condition and only shows minor signs of use and wear!
